Glossary

The educational world contains many acronyms and terms that can be confusing at first.  Further, Twin Rivers Adult School has many acronyms for specific entities.  This glossary should help any stakeholder to better understand the "Alphabet Soup". 

Please note: these definitions have been greatly simplified, and as such there are likely important nuances missing within many of the definitions.

  • ABE - Adult Basic Education - This generally includes Primary School education (grades K-8)
  • ASE - Adult Secondary Education - This generally includes high school completion (grades 9-12) and GED Prep
  • ADA - Average Daily Attendance - Money earned from the State of California when students attend class.
  • ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act - A Federal act that protects the rights of the disabled.
  • AWD - Adults with Disabilities - Classes specifically designed for students with disabilities
  • CDE - California Department of Education
  • CTE - Career and Technical Education - Classes and Programs that directly relate to obtaining employment
  • DAT - Data Action Team - TRAS team concerned with gathering and doing initial analysis of data for other teams.
  • EDD - California Employment Development Department - State agency tasked with employment and unemployment
  • ESL - English as a Second Language
  • ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages (Means basically the same thing as ESL)
  • FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act - A Federal act that protects student rights and privacy
  • GAE - Grant Adult Education - Former name for Twin Rivers Adult School
  • GED - General Educational Development Test (Passing is equivalent to being a high school graduate.)
  • GJUSHD - Grant Joint Union High School District - Former High School District that GAE was part of.
  • HSC - High School Completion - Completing high school through taking classes (as opposed to passing the GED)
  • LEED - Linking Education and Economic Development - Sacramento organization that helps schools and employers to talk.
  • SACOG - Sacramento Area Council of Governments - Provides demographic information for the area
  • SCAT - Student Connectedness Action Team - This was renamed to SCOAR.
  • SCOAR - Student Connectedness thru Orientation, Assessment Retention - TRAS team to help improve retention.
  • SCOE - Sacramento County Office of Education
  • SLAT - Shared Leadership Action Team - TRAS team composed primarily of administrators and department chairs
  • TAT - Technology Action Team - TRAS team concerned with technology and learning resources in the classroom
  • TRAS - Twin Rivers Adult School
  • TRUSD - Twin Rivers Unified School District
  • Voc Ed - Vocational Education, the term formerly used for Career and Technical Education
  • WASC - Western Association of Schools and Colleges - The official accrediting body for California
